Holy Saviour Bitterne
Construction Extension New Build Alteration

Objective

Holy Saviour Bitterne is a popular Grade II listed Parish Church located in Southampton. In 2020, Mountjoy were appointed to deliver the first phase of a two-phase project to enhance the space and make it equipped for the local community for years to come. The £950k project involved enabling works and the construction of a new two-storey 80m² extension and alteration works to the existing Church.

Solution

The project ran for just over a year, commencing in January 2021 and completing in January 2022.

The first phase of the project primarily focused on the new build extension, with the latter phase - commencing later in 2022 - to involve most of the internal alterations within the main church.

The enabling element of our phase included the widening of the access path to the main entrance of the Church and the construction of a WC and storage facility within the existing Church.

The extension works to the outbuilding included the creation of two Church rooms, WCs, cleaners’ cupboard and a kitchen along with a new platform lift. We also installed a new steel staircase up to the first floor which contains another Church room, disabled WC and storage rooms.

Whilst the Church was unoccupied for the duration of the works, the adjoining cemetery remained open – so the safety of visitors remained paramount in ensuring a successful project. To accommodate visitors our site team kept an access path open throughout the works, with all adjacent construction routes segregated to prevent unauthorised access.
