Thornden School | Glulam Beam Replacement
Thornden School
Refurbishment Construction Education

Objective

During the summer of 2018 at Thornden School in Chandler’s Ford, a large glulam beam within the structure of the main school hall suffered a major failure. Whilst initial works were undertaken to ensure the building’s structural integrity, it was determined that a replacement beam would be the best long-term solution. In 2020 the school, supported by Synergy Consulting, secured funding for the project from the Department for Education through the Condition Improvement Fund.

Solution

Mountjoy was awarded the contract to replace the large glulam beam, undertake associated roofing works and make other improvements to the school hall. To enable the works to go ahead, our team dismantled the existing single ply membrane roof and structure before installing the new roof beam and replacement roof as well as new underfloor heating. The works have helped to bring the school hall back into use by providing enhanced sporting and performance facilities for both pupils and staff.
