Isle of Wight Council | Family Centre & Preschool Extension
Isle of Wight Council
Extension Construction Alteration Education Local Authority

Objective

The Isle of Wight Council was looking to provide extra community space for families on the Island; as such, an extension to the existing East Cowes Family Centre was proposed to provide additional space to house the Seashells Preschool.

Solution

Mountjoy were appointed to carry out the building alteration works, which included the construction of a single extension to the rear of the existing building, along with internal alterations and associated mechanical and electrical works, Additionally, new aluminium doors and windows were installed along with new Preschool WCs, new classroom sink units, new flooring and new stud partitions to form the corridor entrance lobby. External landscaping also formed part of the scope of works.

The key challenge involved the shared access route with the adjacent Queensgate Foundation Primary School. During the school's operational hours, our Site Manager would move the Heras security fencing to allow for staff and pupil movements, deliveries were also not permitted during these hours. Furthermore, we installed track mats along the access route in order to protect the pathway from potential vehicle damage.

The 16-week project was completed in March 2019 and was on time, to budget and defect free.
