Southampton City Council | New Lift Shaft at Supported Housing Block
Southampton City Council
Construction Accommodation Live Environment Local Authority

The Objective

Removal of an old lift and installation of a new external lift at Manston Court social housing block for Southampton City Council.  The lift needed to hold a much larger capacity than the previous one which only held two people.

The Solution

Manston Court is a three floor residential supported housing block in the Lordshill area of Southampton with residents in occupation so works had to be carefully considered. Close liaison with the residents and scheme manager was maintained through daily contact with our Site Manager, letter drops and updated noticeboards, all explaining the working hours and any changes in access routes.

The existing lift was still left in use whilst the excavation works, new openings, building underpinning and new lift shaft were carried out. Services for SSE and Virgin Media had to be diverted to carry out the project.

The challenges of the project included unknown locations of existing drainage services and keeping the electric power to the building live during works as they had a call centre on site which had to be kept up and running.
