Refurbishment Fit-out Kitchen Replacements Accommodation Education

The Objective

The University of Portsmouth required refurbishment of several floors of one of their accommodation blocks, Harry Law Halls, to bring it up to standard. Harry Law Halls on the University’s Guildhall Campus had a refurbishment of the fourth floor in 2012 which was carried out by Mountjoy as part of a summer building  framework but further floors required development.

The Solution

A new contract was awarded to Mountjoy in 2013 was for three years of summer works to all five floors covering kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and the corridors in between.

The first phase of the three-stage overhaul began in July 2013 with work commencing on the remainder of the old style rooms on the fourth floor where 27 ensuite rooms were refurbished and three kitchens replaced. Work then began on the third floor where Mountjoy revamped 59 ensuite rooms and replaced 13 kitchens. The works were completed in August prior to the start of the new academic year.

To bring the accommodation up to standard the works involved demolition of internal walls, changes in layout, painting and decorating, replacing light fittings and flooring, replacing internal doors, sanitary fittings, kitchen units as well as electrical appliances.

The second phase, for the second floor and part of the first floor, started inJuly 2014 once the students were absent, and the final phase took place in 2015 in order to complete the renovation of the first floor and the ground floor.
