The Objective

Isle of Wight Council awarded a contract to Mountjoy to carry out major renovation works to the former Downside Middle School. The works were to provide community facilities and to enable relocation of Barton Primary School and Early Years Centre and East Newport Children's Centre.

The project had been eager to get underway for a number of years; Barton Primary School had been hoping to move since autumn 2013 until finding its new home at the new facilities at Downside Middle School.

The Solution

As well as the internal alterations and refurbishment for the school relocation, the works also included alterations to create a new children’s centre and community centre including relocating the existing Isobel Centre. The project was carefully phased to create minimal disruption and to allow users to take possession of areas as they became available.

Safety was a high priority on site with the school located in the centre of the community surrounded by residential houses, local shops and a public playing field and footpath. Heras fencing barriers were maintained as a site boundary.

Our building team maintained continual communication with the local residents via the Isobel Café where they could drop in to meet the Site Manager with queries.
